World Sugar Farmer's Conference Kicks Off at Amity Technology
Amity Technology hosted the opening ceremonies of the 8th World Sugar Farmer's Conference for 2004. Delegates from 30 nations attended the event, representing countries responsible for almost two-thirds of world sugar production.
Speaking at the event were Roger Stewart, president of the World Association of Beet and Cane Growers; Steve Williams, president of the Red River Valley Sugar Beet Growers Association; North Dakota Governor John Hoeven; and Howard Dahl, president of Amity Technology.
Stewart opened with an overview of the global sugar industry, citing major changes in the sugar economy, including: Brazil's growth and dominance of the world market; changing regulations in the European Union; and the impact of drought in Australian growing regions.
He also highlighted the place of ethanol in the fuel market. "The recent technological advances that have led to the introduction of 'flexi cars,' capable of operating on any blend of petrol and ethanol, is a major boost
to ethanol consumption," he said.
After an address by Williams, Hoeven touted the farming and manufacturing abilities of the Red River Valley, and called for fair trade practices.
The morning concluded with tours of Amity Technology's manufacturing facilities.
